gimme a “THIS” gimme a “IS” gimme a “GOING” gimme a “TO” gimme a “SUUUUUCK!!!”

A musical version of 2000′s hit cheerleading flick Bring It On is hitting the center stage!

Bring It On: The Musical is currently in pre-production, with Tony winners Lin-Manuel Miranda (In The Heights) and Tom Kitt on board with composing duties – and Amanda Green as the lyricist.

According to director-choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler, the goal of Bring It On: The Musical is “to create a piece of theater that’s not just for little girls.”  Um, okay.  I’ll refrain from ranting on that perplexing quote.

The story will differ from the film version of Bring It On, which starred Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union, centering around “an up-and-comer who angers a fellow cheerleader when she oversteps her bounds.”  I’m sure it will also have nothing to do with the various straight to DVD releases of the same title.

The musical is set to start touring in 2011, with no concrete plans for NYC or Broadway just yet …and I hope it never does.  I guess they thought the success of Legally Blonde made it okay to do this.  The only way this is going to be good is if they are bitingly tongue and cheek.  However, if based off the film, I’m out of luck.  Oh theatre world …is this some sort of campaign  trying to break the mold of artistic snobbery or something?
