hi my name is Elias, won’t you be my family?

I dare you not to “aaaaaaaaw!”

Every so often I go onto petfinder.com to see what dogs are in need of adoption.  It’s masochistic because I want to save them all and I can’t.  I really want to find a “sibling” for Bowser because he is a very loving and social dog who thrives around a proper playmate.  Right now is simply not the right time for the responsibility of another dog.  I came across this pup and melted into a puddle.  Based off the description, he’d have way too much energy for me to keep up with anyway.  However, he’s going to be a fantastic addition to the right home.

His name is Elias.  He’s a 4 month old Australian Cattle mix (the only kind of breed I look at now that I’ve experienced Bows).  This means he’s a smart dog …and this breed tends to need tasks and activities since they’re a working dog.  There are exceptions to the rule.  Bowser is very smart, loves to play and walk …but will go on strike if you expect too much of a workout from him.  I need another dog with a similar personality.  Elias isn’t it, but I know plenty of people out there would be a great match!  I doubt he’ll have a hard time being adopted, but I wanted to do my small part to spread the word.  All rescue dogs come with up to date shots, are fixed (or if too young, will cover the cost AND EXPECT that you take care of that at the appropriate time) and are micro chipped.

You will never feel anything better than saving an animal and giving it a safe and loving home.  Trust me, that animal will pay you back with SO much love and appreciation you won’t know what to do with yourself!  You can rest easy knowing your pet didn’t come from a cruel puppy mill.  Read up on them, it will make you sick to your stomach and you’ll never be able to go in a pet shop again.  Not to mention (and I know I’ve mentioned it before) mutts make the BEST pets.  You don’t have to worry about mental/physical deficiencies from inbreeding.

Elias certainly isn’t the only one out there.  There’s an animal out there for everyone (if they have the time and ability).  In fact, there are lots and lots of animals that aren’t adorable little puppies that pretty much sell themselves that are just waiting to be saved.  But you just never know.  I just saw a poor 6 month old dog in San Bernardino up for last call before he is killed.  He doesn’t even get a name, he gets a number: A412222.  It makes my eyes tear up just thinking about it.  This sweet, beautiful boy is going to be taken away from his life before he even got a chance simply because of irresponsibility and nobody taking a chance on him.  I’d better stop right now or I’m going to run out and try to save him myself….

Please, click on the link for either dog and see what you can do …one was just so damn cute I had to post something.  The other is in such immediate danger (and VERY cute/smart…all vital ingredients for a wonderful pet) I HAD to share.  If I had more info. on the sweet little guy on death row, I’d make more of a post. Check out Petfinder for yourself and see if you can help.

rachel ray helps dogs in need this holiday season!

Monday, November 8th, 2010

We all know Rachael Ray loves cooking, but she cares about dogs as well!  It turns out this love for dogs has made Rachael decide to play Santa to many animals with no one to care for them this holiday season!  She will be donating more than $770,000 to more than 15 pet rescue organizations and shelters around the country.  She will be delivering these donations to the shelters starting tomorrow in 12 different cities across the US!

Also, in 2008 Rachael started a line of dog food and treats called Nutrish and donates all of her money from sales to animals in need.

This is a kind and very needed gesture.  I knew I liked her pots and pans but I love to hear this even more!  I love hearing about successful people actually giving back.  That’s the way to do it.  Hooray for Rachel!

pet safety tips for halloween

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

We all want to have fun on Halloween, but we also want our pets to stay safe!

Dr. Patrick Mahaney, veterinarian, gives his top 5 tips for keeping your precious pets safe during Halloween festivities.

First of all you should keep all that candy we love so much out of reach of your pet!  Chocolate, sugar, fat, and other ingredients found in Halloween candy can be harmful to your pet.

Next, make sure to avoid stressful Halloween situations.  Sometimes scaring each other is a rush for us, however pets can get very nervous.  If your pet barks excessively, becomes aggressive, hides, or exhibits other behaviors as a result of the many stressors occurring around Halloween, make arrangements so your pet does not have to be around uncomfortable situations.

It is very fun to decorate the house for Halloween, however you have to be careful with these decorations.  It could be smart to switch out real candles for electric ones, and watch out for cords and strings that can cause strangulation or shocks.

When going out or even staying in for Halloween you should always make sure your pet is properly identified.  Make sure to keep a collar on your pet, and if you are nervous you can take the next step and get a microchip implanted into your pet with all of your information.

Finally, while we love to dress up, sometimes our pets do not.  If you do choose to dress your pet up, make sure to keep them under close observation.  Consider that any or all parts of the costume could be ingested.  Also, trim off strings and extra material that could get caught around your pet’s neck or muzzle.

Have fun and stay safe during Halloween!

hire your own drug sniffing dog

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

We have seen these drug sniffing pups at airports and used by law enforcement, however now you can get your very own!

…well for a rate of $200 an hour.

A nonprofit group in Maryland called Dogs Finding Drugs offers the services of these pooches trained to work in law enforcement that can detect traces of drugs within seconds!  According to this group parents are flooding the doors, desperate to find out of their children are using drugs.  The dogs will also be available to businesses and schools.

The drugs that are found from this service will not be confiscated and the police will not be notified.  By the way, if you need a drug sniffing dog to figure out if your kid is doing drugs, you’re kind of an idiot and not the best of parents.  Just saying …leave the dogs to real work.
