quidditch …an ncaa sport?

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Did you know that Quidditch, the broom-based sport from the Harry Potter series (as if you didn’t know), has become a real sport?  For all the details and guidelines to this sport (given the fact that us muggles can’t fly on brooms) CLICK HERE.

Don’t believe me?  Why don’t you ask one of the 60 teams that will gather at De Witt Clinton Park in NYC next weekend for the fourth annual Quidditch World Cup!  The event will be attended by high schools and universities from all over the country, including Harvard, Yale, and Duke.  While many super nerds people might be satisfied with the fact that the sport has become a reality, Valerie Fischman, a student from the University of Maryland, wants more!

Fischman has launched a campaign for Quidditch to be recognized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Here’s what she had to say about it:

“I think that having NCAA status will give it a little more credibility and help keep it around a little bit longer. I’m hoping that it stays around after the Harry Potter generation leaves college.”

Here’s what would be necessary to make Quidditch an NCAA sport:

-Official Quidditch clubs must be in at least 50 colleges across the country

-Athletic directors from 50+ colleges must individually petition the NCAA

Fischman will be seeking support from the International Quidditch Association which actually exists.

You know something, I think it sounds like fun …I’d totally get behind this.  Why should football people have all the fun?

obese mcdonald’s manager sues mcdonalds for gaining weight …and wins!

Friday, November 5th, 2010

A McDonald’s manager in Brazil has successfully sued the company over $17,500, claiming that the food he ate made him gain 65 lbs while working there.  He says that the free lunches he was given, as well as sampling the food for quality contributed to his weight gain.  HA!  “sampling the food for quality.”

McDonald’s says that they will appeal the court’s decision, asserting that they serve healthy choices that the manager could have eaten if he wanted to.  While McDonald’s is notorious for being unhealthy, me thinks they might be right on this one.  The manager could have eaten the salads or done more to control the portions he ate …or even better, he could have taken his cheap fat ass elsewhere to eat a meal.  If he didn’t want to spend too much on lunches or didn’t have time to leave, I have another suggestion: bring your own lunch from home!

What an asshole…

walnuts! the healthy stress/cholesterol busting snack

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

No, I’m not on an adorable fuzzy woodland creature kick.  The squirrel (whom I don’t find to be adorable …I think squirrels are shifty little bastards …bunnies ARE adorable, they’re just mean) is to represent this story.  There is a snack out there that will help relieve stress…Walnuts!

These very healthy nuts are full of compounds that help zap stress and calm you down.  According to a study from Penn State, walnuts are a stress buster. Healthy adults with high cholesterol were put on a 6 week walnut diet. These adults successfully lowered their blood pressure.  A 1 ounce serving of walnuts, about 14 shelled nuts, which is under 200 calories, is the way to help get rid of stress.

Good to know!  Walnuts, almonds and peanuts are the only ones I like, so that works out quite nicely.

diabetes in america will probably TRIPLE by 2050!

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

According to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three American adults will have diabetes by 2050.  23.6 million Americans are currently living with diabetes (1 in 10), and 6 million don’t even know they have it. 57 million Americans are pre-diabetic and will develop it at some point in their lives.

Ann Albright, director of the CDC’s Division of Diabetes Translation, said two factors contribute to the expected rise in diabetes cases: people are living longer and doctors are diagnosing them earlier.  The majority of new cases in the coming years will be Type-2 Diabetes, which is often a result of poor diet and exercise.

This is an epidemic!  We all need to make changes in the way we are living our lives.  Don’t wait to start making healthy lifestyle changes!

david beckham: hot AND funny

Friday, October 29th, 2010

This is the hardest I’ve laughed since the Peacock Chatroulette video!  This is better in a more, ah, understated way.  Soccer stud David Beckham is generally known for being a rather mild mannered  guy, so it must have been super embarrassing and hard for him to keep this prank on a masseuse (conducted by Ellen DeGeneres) for as long as he did.  Seriously!  ANYONE would have a hard time keeping a straight face the way he managed to.  Props to Beckham for being a good sport, doing a good job at it AND taking his shirt off.  Thank you for the laughter David, and the shirtlessness.
