This one’s for you Chiara!

Behold, Kellan Lutz (AKA “one of the several pretty people of Twilight) posing for an “adopt don’t buy” campaign with PETA (ew, but their heart is in the right place in this instance) with his own rescue pooch Kola .  AAAAAAAAAW.

quidditch …an ncaa sport?

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Did you know that Quidditch, the broom-based sport from the Harry Potter series (as if you didn’t know), has become a real sport?  For all the details and guidelines to this sport (given the fact that us muggles can’t fly on brooms) CLICK HERE.

Don’t believe me?  Why don’t you ask one of the 60 teams that will gather at De Witt Clinton Park in NYC next weekend for the fourth annual Quidditch World Cup!  The event will be attended by high schools and universities from all over the country, including Harvard, Yale, and Duke.  While many super nerds people might be satisfied with the fact that the sport has become a reality, Valerie Fischman, a student from the University of Maryland, wants more!

Fischman has launched a campaign for Quidditch to be recognized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Here’s what she had to say about it:

“I think that having NCAA status will give it a little more credibility and help keep it around a little bit longer. I’m hoping that it stays around after the Harry Potter generation leaves college.”

Here’s what would be necessary to make Quidditch an NCAA sport:

-Official Quidditch clubs must be in at least 50 colleges across the country

-Athletic directors from 50+ colleges must individually petition the NCAA

Fischman will be seeking support from the International Quidditch Association which actually exists.

You know something, I think it sounds like fun …I’d totally get behind this.  Why should football people have all the fun?

‘harry potter’ to blame for the declining owl population?

Monday, November 8th, 2010

In India, this may be partly true.

Children inspired by the popular books and movies of the wizarding world of have been asking their parents for and trapping owls to be like Harry Potter and his friends.  In the story, Harry keeps a white owl named Hedwig.  Indian Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said that “there seems to be a strange fascination even among the urban middle classes for presenting their children with owls.”

These concerns came after a report by a wildlife group which showed a sharp decline in India’s owl population.

Harry Potter may be part of the problem, however it is not the only reason for this decrease.  Owls have been trapped and traded due to a festival called Diwali, in which owls are said to have magical powers and are used in ceremonial sacrifices.  Oh what the hell people…

Members of wildlife are trying to convince kids that want to be like Harry to go bird watching instead of trapping the animals.  Yes, that would be the sensible thing to do.  I guess sensible isn’t in the cards for people that are trapping wild animals and trying to keep them as pets because a fictional story made it seem cool.  When I go to the zoo I always want to take home a hippo or an giraffe …but I don’t, it’s not sensible for me or the animal.  Kids might not get that, but where is the parents’ common sense in all of this???

Owls are gorgeous creatures but they also are not meant to be held captive in suburbia.  That’s going to end up hurting/killing the bird or the people who were dumb enough to to nab them in the first place (though I must say, it would serve them right).  Owls will fuck your shit up, have you seen their beaks and claws???  Not to mention owls are smart enough to know your muggle ass is very much not magical.  No, they aren’t going to to want to stick around without a trip to Hogwarts to sweeten the deal.

leonardo dicaprio to take on the roll of serial killer dr. hh holmes

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

This has to be his darkest role to date, by far.

Sources are confirming that Leonardo DiCaprio and his Appian Way partner Jennifer Killoran have secured the rights to the critically acclaimed nonfiction book The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic And Madness At The Fair That Changed America. The book follows the murders of Dr. HH Holmes, known to be the first major serial killer in American history.  He’s believed to have murdered anywhere between 27 to 200 people at a time of the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1893.

Not only is Leo’s company producing the flick, but Leo is said to be starring as the infamous killer in the film adaptation.

I wonder if he’ll be turning to his old friend Martin Scorsese for a little guidance on this one …overall, the project seems like a good fit.  It sounds interesting and it sounds like something DiCaprio can knock out of the park.  I don’t want to dislike him (I like liking him!) BUT, it’ll be a fun challenge for him as an actor.

seth rogen barely appears in first major ‘green hornet’ poster

Friday, November 5th, 2010

It’s almost as difficult to find Seth Rogen on this Green Hornet poster as it used to be to find Waldo in those over-sized books!  Looks like Columbia thinks that a car with a machine gun on it is more of a draw than Rogen…

Gee, I wonder if he’ll take offense to this, given the fact that he worked really hard to get into good shape for the role.  Cool poster for an action film though, good call.  The studio probably just wanted to make sure it wasn’t a Judd Apatow deal.  As if the fit shape and costume don’t give it away.  The next poster will be reversed due to the surprised response …it’ll be a close up of one of his pores or something.

Aw, tough break Rogen.  Time to make a dry piffy quip about it.
