The image above is the next addition to the apartment. It’s a giant frame I’ve been drooling over at Ikea for ages now. I just never really knew what content would go in it. Chris has gamely agreed it’s a cool frame and a keeper. We then got to discussing what should go in this epic structure. It’s so ornate and deserves to hang over the couch or the bed. We instantly went the direction of what would be the funniest thing to have sitting in this regal piece. Chris instantly went to any member of the Wu Tang clan and I totally agreed (well, not any member, we were hoping more specifically for Ol’ Dirty Bastard or Ghostface Killah). We ran into the problem of finding any brilliant images large enough or that could be cut to fit the oval frame (24×36 is roughly the size we’re looking for). I did learned through this search that eBay currently has 491 items found for “black guy.” Oh internet, you’re so helpful at trying to assist based off of hip hop searches …but that’s a little vague. What was I thinking? I should have clicked out of sheer curiosity and seen what it was eBay came up with for “black guy” …there was a lot found!
We then started typing in people at random we found amusing to have featured so prominently over a major piece of furniture. Steve Guttenberg: he would be a gratifying, though now completely obscure, choice. Bill Cosby: there were some excellent options with him and I have considered fighting for him as the winner, what a nice presence to have around the house. Huey Lewis…
and the list continued…
We have found two that would fit the frame and would bring a us a daily laugh (and an even bigger laugh when company came over). I imagine reactions would vary. My mom would ask me “Why?” and find some eloquent way to tell me how stupid it is …and then ask why again. Most of our friends would most likely: laugh their asses off, ask “what the hell…?!” while smirking or not even notice it because it would come as no surprise. I just like the idea of having something that I’m pretty sure would be unique to my home (something hard to achieve when you furnish your home through Ikea). I’d love to hear input on which of the two should take the prize. Who knows, we might find the perfect Carl Carlton, Chevy Chase or Olivia Newton John print and the whole thing is a wash. It has become what is now dubbed: “The Battle of The Genes!” (both brilliant performers, yet very different guys). Anyway, which do you like more?
Everything about this is greatness. Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor as a jail bird with his chess set and leopard print throw. Ridiculous yet distinguished in his own right, because he’s Hackman.
Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein. Willy Wonka was a notion. It would have looked cool with bright colors and a top hat in contrast to the black frame, but nah. It just doesn’t have the “it” factor we’re looking for, and those images are over exposed as it is. This picture is almost too perfect for that frame, it would nicely in the Haunted Mansion …hmm, I like that. Part of what we liked about this idea was the concept of contrasting the image to the frame (still holding out hope to find just the right ODB print). But these choices work nicely.
So, what do you think? If you have any new ideas or want to pitch in what you think between the two we are deciding on at the moment, leave a comment below!
